Don't know anything about what careers are out there and which you'd be good at. How do you get started?

Share below how you landed your first job(s) and how you decided this career path. Any regrets?

May I ask what your major is? You should line up your career trajectory with your major. It would be much eaiser.

Also just figure out take some personality tests and there are quite a few that have career implications.

If you are a hardo, just go for the prestigious finance and consulting

Honestly i don't think major has too much to do with it unless it's vocational e.g. architecture, engineer, doctor or lawyer. My advice would be to explore as many fields as you can by reading them on this site. After you figure out what takes your fancy, start reaching out to people you know who work in these industries and ask them about their day-to-days. After you narrow it down to one or two jobs/industries try and get practical experience in this as soon as possible to figure out whether it's for you! I suggest doing this as soon as possible (before junior year) - so you know exactly what you want to do after you graduate.

Investment Banking

Ironically, I watched a lot of Wall Street movies when i was young and said i wanted to join the industry before i even knew what it was. When i got to college a lot of my friends were entering the industry so i spoke to them to figure out whether it was for me. I realised the lifestyle and daily sacrifices it required and came to the conclusion that i was prepared to live this life. Currently i don't know if i'm going to stay in the industry or move onto another - banking gives you the bread and butter for most financial roles and is often the stepping stone towards PE or VC or funds. I don't know what my future 5-10 year plan is, but banking gives optionality to stay in the industry your whole life or move to an array of other jobs.

Finding what you're interested in or what you are good at can be really hard sometimes. My first job was in entertainment but I decided to start there since I knew I didn't want to do finance like all my friends and I enjoyed following the entertainment industry way more. Plus it's cool working with (directly and indirectly) famous people lol

I recommend talking to friends and getting internships to see what you're good at/what you like.

Doing an internship and realizing you don't want to a job is also really beneficial because you know that career isn't a good fit for you and you can cross it off the list
