I hear of friends going into Investment Banking (IB) so that they can switch to PE and VC after putting in a couple years. Is it possible to go directly? If so, what types of PE and/or VC firms recruit undergrad? Are there any disadvantages to going directly from undergrad and skipping IB?

I answer this question on the PE Interview Prep Topic

But I have pasted the answer again here:

It depends. For the grand majority of the larger PE firms, you do need some IB or relevant PE/VC experience before getting a job there. However, there are certainly some smaller PE shops (they're pretty reputable too) that recruit from undergrad.

Blackstone (one of the megafunds) recruits undergrad but it's very very hard to land one of those spots. And even those individuals had a good amount of IB internship experience under their belt already (and standout GPAs at top top schools)
