Overview

Interviewing for a role as an assistant at a Talent Agency varies depending on the agency, however, you should be prepared to answer the following:

  1. Behavioral Questions - Questions about your life, team/leadership qualities, work ethic, and experiences.
  2. Department/Industry-Related Questions - You need to know what department within the talent agency you want to work in and you need to have a reason to justify this interest. It is important you are up to date on industry news, trends, and some of the agency's clients within that specific department. Furthermore, it is important to be able to explain how your experiences led to your interest in this department/industry and what skills will make you successful.

Additionally, some agencies have a final-round interview called the "Panel Interview". This is when the applicant gets interviewed by a group of 3-5 agents at once and needs to answer similar questions to the above.

Job Prep:

If you follow standard interview etiquette (dressing well, clean resume, etc.) and make sure you can concisely and persuasively answer the above questions you will be in good shape. Sometimes, the most difficult part of this process is getting your foot in the door at these top agencies. Because of this, you should put in some time networking to get an internal reference, as that can make a big difference.

To get an idea of how Talent Agencies have grown, "The Mailroom" by David Rensin is a must-read. It is a good idea to read through this before your interview so you have a bit of an understanding of the history of agencies, how they work, and what it takes to be successful at one.

I agree with most of this! You should also expect to be asked about your favorite films or TV shows. They may even ask you for the last book you read, especially if Publishing is a department of interest. This question is very common, as it helps the agency understand what type of content you love and why Entertainment is the career path for you. Above all else, it shows that you actually surround yourself with the content you claim to enjoy.
