What kind of background do I need to be a successful Product Manager?

Question

I know PMs are big at tech companies...do I need to be a strong coder to be a good PM? How can I prepare for a career in PM/the interview process?

Pretty sure you can be a good PM with a lot of different backgrounds. I have a friend who was a former software developer than became a PM, but another friend who was business savvy and have a finance background but landed a PM job.
